ABOUT

I conducted my PhD research at the University of Massachussets Amherst in the UMass Robotics Lab. The main thread of my research was developing a new paradigm for autonomous robots called Interactive Perception. You can find more about this work at the Interactive Perception page. And, for the dedicated reader, check out my dissertation on the topic. Much of my academic work is hosted in my research Homepage. If you care about academic genealogy, here's mine.

Most of my published work is available online. Here are some key publications on pile manipulation, manipulating articulated objects, interactive perception for autonomous manipulation, and my book chapter about Intelligent Object Exploration. I also wrote a paper about how can robots succeed in unstructured environments, a precursor to what will eventually become the Interactive Perception framework. You can find a complete list of publications on ResearchGate or DBLP.

Once I completed my postdoc at CMU, I decided to join Oculus. It was early days for VR. At Oculus I led the computer vision team, including the development of the first commercial virtual reality position tracking. Later on, while Oculus prepared to ship position tracking to consumers, we were acquired by Facebook. My work in Virtual Reality resulted in several patents (also on Justia).

Over the past few years I had the opportunity to present my work at several venues. Here are a few links: I gave presentations at University of Washington and CMU (both with Michael Abrash). I also talked about VR and computer vision here: Computer Vision Challenges for VR, 6D position tracking for VR, Israel Machine Vision Conference, workshop on startup at the Robotics Science and Systems conference (also here).

You can find some cool research videos on YouTube and Vimeo.

Outside of research and technology, I worked on a Hebrew Programming Language project. I also enjoy cooking and baking for my amazing kids. If you're looking for new ideas, here are our family's favorite recipes.

Recently, I've been developing computer vision and machine learning algorithms to disrupt the retail shopping experience.
